As world leaders meet to thrash out plans to help the climate at COP26 in Glasgow, one school in Somerset is putting in its own visionary plans to help save the planet.

Priory Community School Academy’s environmental group ‘PrioryECO’ – has purchased and branded five of what could be Britain’s best school eco bins.

The extra large, super-sturdy solid, five-foot wide, three-foot high recycling and waste bins will be dotted around the outstanding campus site in Weston-super-Mare.

Each have three different compartments for Plastic, Food and General waste.

It is part of a comprehensive eco climate change improving package that will be rolled out in the weeks to come including tree planting.

Tamsen, 13, said: “As part of Priory’s plan to be more eco-friendly, these new bins have arrived at our school. We hope for them to encourage people to recycle more. They will be placed around the school, so wherever people are, they’ll be able to use the right bin for their rubbish. Here’s to a greener school!”

PrioryECO – short for ‘Priory Environmental Community Organisation’ – are now assessing what needs to change and discussing what the best action plan is. http://www.pcsa.org.uk

Passionate about the environment

The school is part of the high-achieving The Priory Learning Trust (TPLT) – which is also passionate about the environment.

PCSA and TPLT are currently partnering in a sensational art transformation of two underpasses near the school.

Inspirational artist Martin Darcy and his talented team of volunteers are halfway through painting the two underpasses with an array of environmental nature Images including a fox, hare, squirrel and trees.

The academy and TPLT is passionate about the environment, and wanted to bring together a project to look to the future post COVID-19 lockdown.

Their students and staff have helped the community in huge ways since the start of lockdown 18 months ago. In the summer, a DT teacher at the school won a prestigious UK award after helping to make nearly 5000 NHS face masks during Covid19.

In September the popular academy saw the biggest numbers of prospective pupils, parents and carers in 20 years attend their Open Evening.
